Schedules & Times:
Having your child to school each day on time is extremely important. Also, whenever possible please schedule appointments after our 3:30 dismissal time. We start our learning promptly at 9:00, and are working hard all the way until 3:30! It's important that we all are here and present for the entire school day!

Homework:
My philosophy on homework is as follows:
I strongly believe in the power of play and the importance of letting children be children. Further, research has been unable to prove the benefits of homework at the Elementary level. I believe that when students give us all of their day, they deserve to have all of their night. Eat dinner as a family, and ask them how their day was and what they learned. Enjoy your child's extra-curricular activities without worrying about homework , and know that your child is working hard at school each day and deserves their evening playtime.
With that being said, I do believe that practicing skills at home is beneficial and that doing so shows students that the work we are learning at school is important everywhere in their life, not just at school. Let your child practice fractions while helping you cook, or have them practice money while calculating your change or counting coins. Expose them to all kinds of literature: magazines, newspapers, books, etc. Read their library books with them and take advantage of our FREE city library where they can choose several books to take home at a time. Students benefit from being life-long learners in all areas of life, and you and I can partner in showing them that their learning, no matter where they are, is important to us!
- MATH: Throughout the week, your child will have math homework to be completed in their "Home Connections" book. The pages to be completed will be marked with a blue star, and should take no more than 15 minutes total to complete. The work will align with what was learned in class that day, and if you notice that the work is a challenge for your child, this may mean that they need extra help with the concept and are also struggling in class. The "Home Connections" book needs to be returned to school the next day, whether the work is complete or not. I don't want students to stay up late to get the work finished if they didn't have time to complete it that night. Please send the book back to school the next day and they will have a chance to get caught up.
- READING: Reading at home is not required, but it is highly recommended. I don't want sitting down with a book to feel like an assignment, I want students to choose to WANT to read, rather than HAVE to read. The reading at home assignment seemed to become more of a chore for families than anything else, and I want to avoid the fight of forcing your child to read in the minimal time you have together at home. Setting up a "quiet" time in your household where everyone turns off the t.v. and settles in on a quiet activity together can be beneficial in helping your child to choose to read. I've also included listen to reading websites in the reading link tab for your child to use at home as well as at school.
